I·CARE Research and Study Scheme 2013-14 (Poster)

Purpose

To encourage students to take up self-initiated research projects with a view to identifying and understanding specific social problems.
Through these projects, to directly or indirectly facilitate students’ all-round development through social and civic engagement.

Eligibility of applicants

All CUHK students (graduate after May 2014), individually or in groups, will be eligible to apply for funding support under this scheme. Each student can participate (individually or in groups) up to a maximum of 3 projects in each academic year.

Coverage of research and study

In general, all research to understand or solve social problems are relevant, such as, research in social and civic engagement projects, longitudinal studies in students’ participation in social and civic engagement projects, studies in the effectiveness of these engagement projects, research in social issues.

Students are encouraged to identify and study specific social problems/phenomenon, and consequently to make informed recommendations on possible solutions to these problems.

The research/study projects should not be part of the students’ credit-bearing programmes.

Application procedure

Interested students please complete the research proposal and SBRE application Form (endorsed by professors) and submit to respective faculty office (For Engineering and Science students, SBRE application should be submitted to Room 111, Sino Building, Faculty Office of Social Science).
After receiving SBRE approval (require 7-10 working days), students please submit the proposal with SBRE approval to I.CARE Programme Office (Room 603, Hui Yeung Shing Building).

Scholarship

Each team will receive an “I.CARE Social Research Scholarship” of HK$2,000 on the condition that the final report receive grade “Merit” or above. Outstanding award may be granted for distinguish research projects and receive an additional HK$3,000-6,000 scholarship.
(Only project submitted on or before 30 May 2014 are eligible for outstanding award selection in year 2013-14) 

Addition Funding Support

Funding support of up to HK$3,000 (up to $8,000 for exceptionally large scale research, student must fulfill the requirement listed in application guidelines) may be requested to subsidise direct research costs. Students must apply during application process. (Funding will normally be granted on a reimbursement basis after the completion of the project. All the receipts must be submitted for the reimbursement.)

Application deadline

First round: 28-Oct-2013  (Result will be announced in late November 2013.)
Second round: 30-May-2014 (until scholarship and funding exhausted). Result will be announced in 1-2 months after all information is submitted.

*Students are advised to apply in the first round in order to have more time for project implementation.

Final report submission deadline

First round: 30 May 2014
Second round: 4 months after project application result announced, or the graduation date of the principle investigator, whichever is earlier
(Only project submitted on or before 30 May 2014 are eligible for outstanding award selection in year 2013-14)
